Current Research

My long-term research program addresses how the tectonics and surface processes in active collision orogens interact to shape the physical evolution of the lithosphere at all spatial and temporal scales. I have selected several of these processes and a world-class field example to study the natural conditions. The goal of my investigations is twofold: (a) Determine how rocks from the base of the crust or from lithospheric mantle become rapidly exhumed in a convergent orogen without regional tectonic denudation. (b) Provide field tests for the numerical and analogue model predictions on the influence of climate on the tectonic evolution of mountain belts. Combined the findings of my research student over the past few years indicate that the metamorphic core of the Himalaya (at least in its eastern part) formed as a stack of units which experienced different exhumation histories following the attainment of a variety of peak temperature conditions. The youngest unit is the hottest and is derived from the base of the up to 80 km think crust underneath southern Tibet. These units experienced a common cooling history after ca. 11-10 million years. The final exhumation of these rocks and the formation of the landscape in the eastern Himalaya were modulated by synoptic and local climate changes. Together these geological activities have shaped the recent earthquake activities in the area.

Current and Recent Research Projects: (2004-present)

1. Syn-convergence exhumation of crustal eclogites: combination of structural geology, metamorphic petrology, dating of zircon and monazite and trace element geochemistry on these minerals.

2. Testing and further development of the channel flow hypothesis: combination of structural geology, metamorphic petrology, dating of zircon and monazite and trace element geochemistry on these minerals.

3. Spatiotemporal changes of precipitation, erosion, sedimentation and deformation in an orogenic foreland: combination of structural geology, sedimentary petrology, low temperature thermochronology, stable isotope geochemistry.

4. Development of trace element geothermometers (especially Ti-in-quartz geothermometry): structural geology, microtectonics and trace element geochemistry of quartz mylonites

5. Salt system dynamics: scaled analogue experiments with layered brittle and ductile materials were used to simulate the development of structures during gravitational spreading of a passive margin sedimentary wedge detached on salt.
