Positions

Scientific consultant, Habitat Ecology Division, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Bedford Institute of Oceanography
Research on the natural processes of oil-mineral aggregation and their enhancement to clean-up oil spills and mitigate environmental impacts in marine and fresh waters. This work has advanced the fundamental understanding of the ways oiled shorelines self-clean, has produced field and laboratory methods to detect and characterize oil-mineral aggregation and has helped validate clean-up methods based on the acceleration of this natural process.
May 1996 - August 2002
Scientific consultant, Marine Environmental Sciences Division, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Bedford Institute of Oceanography
Identification of black carbon particles from combustion of wood, coal, or oil in marine sediments of Halifax Inlet. Black carbon particles are a tracer of human activity in space and time and thus a useful tool to evaluate the extent of industrial environmental impacts.
April 1995 - March 1996
Contractual manager of the Microanalysis Facility, Geological Survey of Canada Atlantic, Bedford Institute of Oceanography
The emphasis of my work has been to solve scientific problems in a variety fields (environmental geology, marine chemistry, sedimentology, mineralogy, microbiology, palaeontology, palynology, geomechanics) in diverse environments (i.e. Halifax Harbour, Arctic Ocean, the deep-sea) using novel analytical techniques. Under my supervision, the laboratory grew into a multi-user facility with state-of-the-art instruments servicing the needs of government institutions, universities and the private sector.
November 1983 - March 1995
National Research Council visiting Fellow,Atlantic Geoscience Centre, Geological Survey of Canada, Bedford Institute of Oceanography
Investigation of chemical diagenesis in marine sediments in the context of a project on the feasibility of nuclear waste disposal in the sea floor commissioned by the Atomic Energy Commission of Canada.
October 1981 - September 1983
Research Associate,Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University
Study of the up-take of dissolved aluminium by diatom cultures and the implications for the behaviour of dissolved aluminium and silica in marine sediments.
September 1980 - August 1981
Killam post-doctoral fellow,Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University
