Summer employment involving field work !!!
If you enjoy solving complex multi-dimensional problems consider a career in the Earth Sciences
The Best Department is getting
BETTER ALL THE TIME
Earth Sciences students study the earth and deal with many questions such as: How was the earth formed? Where do we look for oil? Or nickel? Or reliable water supplies? What are the environmental implications as we move to exploit more and more earth resources?
The Department of Earth Sciences uses computers to assist instruction in a number of classes and even in one of the off-campus field schools. A state-of-the-art computer lab allows us to offer classes in geographic information systems (GIS) and to explore various other geological and environmental science problems. Although Geography is not available as a degree program, we offer an introductory class in physical geography (ERTH 1030), as well as advanced classes about the earth's landscape and environment.
If you have an interest in Earth Sciences, you should take two of our half-classes (preferably ERTH 1010 and 1020 and 1060) in your first year. Ideally, your first year program should also include a full class in Math, one in Chemistry, one to satisfy the 'writing requirement' and one in another science subject (e.g. Biology, Physics).
Class Size
First-year classes range from 30 - 80 students. Upper-level classes have enrolments of 5 - 25 students. Lab classes are restricted to 25 students.
What are some Dalhousie graduates doing with degrees in Earth Sciences?
They are: petroleum geologists, paleontologists, marine geologists, geophysicists, professors, surveyors, environmental consultants, landuse planners, groundwater specialists, computer and software experts, teachers, doctors, lawyers and business people.
Other related degrees you can earn at Dalhousie after a BSc in Earth Sciences (Honours)
MSc - (Master of Science) - 1 to 2 years
